3 Gems, 2 Months, 1 Blastoff

Updated: Aug 10, 2020

Two months BLASTED by working as one of the partner relations managers at ApplyBoard. 🚀🔥 By Diana Chang

For context, my gig entails engaging and collaborating with Canadian secondary and post-secondary institutions so our AI powered platform can facilitate even more study abroad opportunities for international students around the world. We have our sales and recruitment team who span over twenty countries; a robust customer experience team that vet and assess applications (95% letter of acceptance rate); client managers I get to collaborate closely with, and of course, folks in Engineering, HR, Ops, Sales Enablement, and IT that all enhance and add to the very diverse fabric that is reflective of a truly international & dynamic workplace.

Reflecting on highlights of working at Canada’s ‘pandemic unicorn’ and our nation’s fastest growing tech company comes in 3 C’s: Colleagues. Clarity. Culture.

1. Colleagues: The partner relations teammates are unreal intelligent, polished, and poised. It’s a privilege to work alongside a team who unconditionally support me when I flail about and put up with my motivational-messages-accompanying-sunrise-west-coast-mountain-photos and mandatory inquisitive prompts at non-mandatory hump day Google hangouts that I coordinate 😭🤣.

2. Clarity: In KPIs and direction allows me to stay honed in on personal and team missions; better prioritizing, better filtering, better vetting of what’s strategic and necessary to the big picture has inspired a filtration lens that I have applied to my life by asking: “Is this necessary?” and “How is this a value add?” when asked of my time or effort. All the yes. 🙌🏻

3. Culture: From wellness and social committees (obviously all over this) to a plethora of seminars, volunteer initiatives, and regular company-wide zooms, I have never once felt disconnected. Our 500+ person team range from hyper saavy recent grads to experts and former deans of top Canadian schools. On day two when the CEO kicked off a 500 person zoom call by asking people to give gratitude shout-outs I felt #allthefeels. 💓 Our CMO and COO were accoladed by Forbes in three categories on their honour list of Top 30 Under 30.

Warm fuzzies aside, the level of professionalism, work ethic, and grit I observe is next level. Being onboarded virtually and based in Vancouver has not felt at all disconnecting, thanks to organized processes. The environment you choose matters: are you growing, are you being challenged, are you supported? This #covidpivot was the best decision and I'm stoked to forge forward.

Check out the multitude of jobs they're hiring for and connect if you want to hear more about my experience. Gratitude and huge kudos for everyone who welcomed newbies like me while we continue our mission to #educatetheworld. #joblove #thoseBasecampBooststhough #mission #allaboard #studyinCanada #applyboard #education #edchat #partnerrelations #culture #startup #tech #Canadiancompany #lovewhatyoudo
